INTELLIGENT TRANSPORT SYSTEM (ITS) BLUEPRINT IN AMARAVATI’S TRANSPORT MASTER PLAN

In order to make roads safer and friendly in Amaravati, the State government is planning to include the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) blueprint in the capital city’s transport master plan. A transport master plan for a road network, public transport network and a non-motorized network has been prepared for Amaravati and the government now wants it to complement the same with an ITS blueprint, a top official of the transport department told the media.

“ITS is part of the smart and safe city management and will bring down the number of road accidents, reduce road congestion, help in better implementation of traffic rules as well as decreasing the average travel time and increasing the average road speed,” he explained.

With the traffic in the capital region expected to increase four-fold in the coming years, the State government is keen on pushing through the ITS as it also helps in designing, constructing and maintaining roads that are safe for all, the official said.

“ITS uses communication technology in linking the road users (motorists and pedestrians), the vehicle and the road network into one system to enhance safety, comfort and efficiency,” he added.Elaborating further, he said the ITS will work in three main areas — traffic management and traffic safety (TMS), traveller information systems (TIS) and vehicle control systems (VCS). Once implemented, ITS make ensure smooth traffic flow and give advance information to travellers to plan their journey, the official said.

ITS comes with

– Automatic Number Plate Recognition System
– e-Challan system
– Red light violation detectors
– Vehicle incident detection system
– Vehicle speed detection system
– Advance travel information
– Intelligent traffic signaling
– Integrated complaint monitoring system
– Video surveillance cameras
– Video wall
