Visakhapatnam, a major center of tourist attraction in the state will now start a Police Station exclusively for tourism purposes. There is going to be a special force directly under the Commissionerate to provide more protection to the tourists that come down to the city.
A first of its kind in the country, this force will have 200 personnel which includes officers. These personnel shall be given training to handle tourists. This proposal has already been approved by Chief Minister N. Chandra Babu Naidu and is expected to be cleared shortly.
“The idea is give the tourists a friendly police force. Besides ensuring that the tourists are not fleeced by cab and auto-rickshaw drivers, the police will protect them from eve-teasing and theft”, said T. Yoganand, Commissioner of Police.
From 2013 to 2016, there have been reports of 400 drowning cases and 451 deaths with most of them having happened at RK Beach, Rushikonda and Yarada.
The Commissioner also said that there are only 18 community guards manning a coastline of 90 km and they need to enhance their number to at least one hundred. This force will also work towards that.
