Jayalalithaa, the CM of Tamil Nadu; popularly referred to as ‘amma’ is turning 68 this month and her party AIADMK organised a mass wedding in Coimbatore last week. In what seemed like a really sweet and humanitarian gesture, 68 couples from Udumalpet in Coimbatore district were married by the political party.
But, leave it to our political parties to find a way to brand themselves out of events such as this!
Though Amma was not actually present at the wedding, her presence was well felt; as the couples getting married were made to wear ‘Amma headbands’ with Jayalalithaa’s picture on them and exchange garlands with her face on them as well.
That’s not all, the entire marriage hall was plastered with posters of Jayalalithaa; the grooms sported an AIADMK badge with Jayalalithaa’s photo pinned their silk clothes and the couples were also made to hold bouquets with Amma’s photo; throughout the program.
The event was organised by the deputy Speaker in the Assembly, Pollachi V. Jayaraman.
Reportedly, the couples, chosen by party leaders from the Tiruppur and Coimbatore districts, were handed wedding gifts; ranging from steel almirahs and cots to utensils. Not surprisingly, those too were plastered with photos of Amma.
