South Indians have played a significant role in Bollywood; throughout the ages; whether it is South Indian actors working in Hindi films, or Southie film-makers making Hindi films or Southie films being remade in B-Town.
Here’s taking a look at 20 South Indians who really hit it off in Bollywood:
1. Hema Malini.
The Dream Girl made it huge in Bollywood after making a debut with Sapno Ka Saudagar. She went on to star in massive blockbusters like Sholay, Dharmatma, Satte Pe Satta and a lot more.
2. A R Rehman.
This Chennai based music composer doesn’t need any introduction. With two Academy Awards, two Grammy Awards, a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe, four National Film Awards, fifteen Filmfare Awards to his credit.
One of the most versatile actresses in Indian cinema, Rekha has often played strong female characters in mainstream and parallel cinema. She is best known for her roles in Khoon Bhari Maang, Umrao Jaan.
4. Ram Gopal Varma.
The maverick filmmaker is known for his slick portrayals. He is best known for his Gangster Trilogy and the creation of a new genre in Bollywood – Mumbai Noir.
5. Vidya Balan.
Having made her debut with the 2005 movie Parineeta, this Kerala based actress went on to great heights. Her 2011 film Dirty Picture, where she portrayed life of the actress Silk Smitha, got her a National Award.
Madhavan is known for his roles in highly acclaimed films like Rang De Basanti, Guru, 3 Idiots.
This Chennai lad soared high in Bollywood after his debut film Rang De Basanti and became a household name. He was later seen in Striker and Chashme Baddoor.
