10 Stereotypes that North Indians have about South Indians!

“Oh you’re a Madrasi” or “why are South Indians so dark?” or “all South Indians are so studious and nerdy” and a lot more of such stereotypes are what I heard as I grew up in North India. Such stereotypes reek of ignorance and can be very annoying sometimes. So here’s taking a look at 10 most common stereotypes that North Indians have about South Indians:

1. I am a South Indian, NOT a Madrasi

So, the conversation starts to be like, “Hey there, I am from Andhra and you?” then the other person responds to say “Oh you are a Madrasi”. It had been a good number of years since the states have been formed. We have FIVE states in South India; Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. When we say South India we refer to all four of them. Telugu and Tamil are as different as Gujarati and Punjabi from each other!

2. South Indian men wear Lungi always and women wear Kanchipuram sarees all the time

NO, Just NO. Not always. It is our tradition and we wear those when we want to! We do wear jeans and shirts or trousers or skirts. But don’t you think Lungi and Kanchipuram saree, makes one look hot when they wear?

3. All South Indians are vegetarians

Some of us are hard core non-vegetarians. We survive on chicken. North India has vegetarians too!

4. “Oh! You got Roti and Paneer in your dabba!”

Idly is popular in south, but we are normal human beings too. We also eat Paneer and Roti. And we do cook it at home! Being South Indian does not mean that we are confined to Coconut water or Idly-Dosa all the time.

5. South Indians can’t speak English

Kerala has the highest literacy rate and the literacy rate in South India is more than the entire country’s. So, I hear people saying “Aila you speak fluent English?” And I say with a poker face, “Yes astonishing right?”
We do speak Fluent English just like others!

6. South Indians are dark and weird looking

They are unconventionally beautiful. How about Deepika, Vidya Balan, Sridevi or Rekha? There might be few who are dark, but they are as attractive and beautiful as others.

7. South Indian movies are pointless

Oh! I believe that this must be the reason why they are remade into such new movies. Manirathnam, Bapu, Jandhyala are internationally worshipped and our music has strong influence of classical and it is quite soothing.
BTW, how was Baahubhali? Must be waiting for Second part? Oh, same here!

8. South Indian women apply a lot of oil and put on jasmine flowers in their hair

No, like really? South Indian women are ambitious, creative and no they do not watch soap operas all the time. They do watch other TV shows or they do listen to pop or rock music. Yeah!!

9. South Indians have weird surnames

Well what’s in a name?? North Indian ones sound weird to our ears!

10. All South Indians are conservative

No again. We have parents who are ready to let us go for what we dream for and there had been successful love marriages. There had been many of times where they didn’t mind us wearing shorts or skirts. In south India, girls are encouraged to study further and achieve great heights. We do party.
